VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
The Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle, in cooperation with other community organizations, has a variety of hands-on volunteer programs in which you can participate. Projects include Study Buddy, a mentoring and tutoring program with at-risk youth, and Hello Israel, an opportunity to teach elementary school children about Israel in a non-political, social studies environment.

If you are interested in getting more involved with any of these programs or events or would just like to talk about our various volunteer opportunities, please email CommunityServices@JewishInSeattle.org or call (206) 774-2212

We hold phone-a-thons throughout the campaign. We always need volunteers to help make the calls.

To get more information about our various volunteer opportunities and divisions please fill out our Sign-Up reply form and let us know your areas of interest.

JFS Big Pal Program

Children from families seeking additional adult role models benefit tremendously from the mentoring and companionship provided by same-gender Jewish Big Pals. Some of these rewarding relationships last for years. Big Pals meet their Little Pals once or twice a month and enjoy a variety of worthwhile activities.

If you can't make that monthly commitment, we are also seeking volunteers to join us for group events such as bowling, museum outings, sports and picnics.

For more information, or for a volunteer application, call our Volunteer Department, Jane Deer-Hileman at (206) 461-3240, ext. 3155 or e-mail at volunteer@jfsseattle.org.

Study Buddy

Spreading the Joy of Knowledge: Study Buddy program volunteers Art and Alice making a difference to children in need.

Study Buddy is an education outreach program, sponsored by the Jewish Federation, targeting students who need help with their schoolwork. Built on the Jewish value Tikkun Olam, repairing the world, and the assumption that citizens will assume the responsibility of action on behalf of their communities, the Study Buddy program provides an unparalleled opportunity to engage in social justice and enhance education in your community. General Colin Powell once said, "An involved, caring mentor can plant a seed of hope in a child's heart that can flower into ambition, hard work, self-confidence and, ultimately, success. To do that is to know one of life's most exalting experiences."

Volunteers give back to their community by committing one hour a week to sharing their love of reading, writing, and/or math with children in Seattle public schools, Bellevue public schools through a partnership with VIBES, and other educational institutions on need. Placement options exist to accommodate morning, afternoon, and evening schedules. All Study Buddy tutors are trained by the Jewish Education Council, and have the opportunity to participate in follow-up workshops with fellow tutors and training staff.

The Study Buddy program is part of the National Jewish Council for Literacy effort to mobilize the Jewish community to help in the fight against illiteracy. Make a difference, one child at a time!

For more information about becoming a Study Buddy, please contact Starr at StarrN@jewishinseattle.org or 206-774-2279.
